Is minified JSON lossless?
Yes. Whitespace outside of string literals carries no meaning in JSON, so removing it cannot change the parsed value. Whitespace inside a string is data and is preserved exactly. Key order is preserved as well. Minifying and then re-formatting returns you to a document semantically identical to the one you started with — the only thing you cannot recover is your original indentation choice.
How much smaller does JSON get?
It depends almost entirely on nesting depth, because indentation cost grows with depth. A flat array of short objects might shrink 20%. A deeply nested configuration file formatted with four spaces frequently drops by more than half. Note that minification is a smaller win once gzip or Brotli is in play: compression already handles repeated indentation well, so the marginal saving over the wire is usually a few percent. Minify for payload limits and for storage, not as a substitute for content encoding.
